Top-5 List for Organizing Your Divorce
Tip 1: Re-evaluate your finances. Divorces are expensive, and once you separate from your spouse expenses will escalate – especially if you have children that you care for on your own. It's not uncommon for the other parent to deny support until the court steps in, so work toward saving enough money to cover three months of expenses.
Tip 2: Notes and Calendar Entries. Buy a notebook that you can keep next to you at all times. Have a question, thought, or an idea? Write it down to review with your attorney. Do the same with a calendar or start utilizing Outlook on your Smartphone. When deadlines, appointments, or tasks are set, write them down.
Tip 3: Begin Requesting Records. When you go through a divorce, you will need to get your attorney copies of your income tax returns and other financial documents. Ask your attorney what he or she needs and begin organizing accordingly.
Tip 4: Organize Your Records in Folders. For example, divide the documentation of assets and debts by type (real estate, mortgage, automobiles, bank accounts, retirement, credit cards, insurance, etc.). Divide by vendor and account number.
Tip 5: Think Long-Term. Visualize what you want in life once you're divorced. Make a plan, write it down, and each day find a way to feel successful based on what you've accomplished toward completing another step.
