When an initial complaint of child neglect or abuse is reported by a family member, teacher, neighbor, or another person involved in your child’s life, a 51A is initiated by DSS. An investigation is then started to determine the validity of the complaint. If the report is supported, DSS can either work with the family or remove the child and place him or her in the care of DSS.
